Ty Williams heats up 3S Artspace
Ty Williams harkens warmer locales and hints at the complexity of relationships in a fun new installation at 3S Artspace’s Store Gallery, called “Tropica Moderna.”
The bi-coastal artist called upon the different environments of his homes and travels as he transformed the space with paint, words, furniture and sculpture. He draws from the colorful customs of islands as well as the nautical traditions of New England.
“I still consider this part of the Seacoast my home and somewhat of my own paradise. You can always travel as much as you want and ‘get away’ as much as your bank account will allow, but the things that make us smile and ache are always in our back-pockets,” Williams said in a press release about the show.
His playful mixed media focuses on surf culture and the ocean, with elements of both innocence and heartbreak. He’s collaborated with major labels on apparel designs and installations.
The exhibition will be on display through Sept. 2. It opened on July 20, coinciding with the latest installment of the Loading Dock Concert series, which featured bluegrass musicians Dave Talmage and Mary Dellea that evening.
The temporary Store Gallery is located at 319 Vaughan St. in Portsmouth, where renovation of the multidisciplinary site continues. It’s open Thursdays through Sundays. For more information, call 603-766-3330 or visit www.3sarts.org.
