New England organic vegetable sales beat nation

A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture notes that USDA-certified organic growers in the New England States sold $119.3 million of agicultural commodities in 2011. That’s more than 4 percent of total agricultural cash receipts, compared to a national rate of 1 percent.
Sales of certified organic livestock and poultry products (including organic milk) accounted for $70 million in the New England States. Sales of certified organic crops accounted for around $40 million, of which certified organic maple syrup accounted for over 25 percent, according to the press release.
Vermont sales, at $66 million, led the New England States. Maine was second in New England with $24 million, followed by New Hampshire, with $17 million.
