Smutty releases Lindz
Beer lovers around the Seacoast will be raising a toast together on Thursday, Oct. 18, as nearly 20 restaurants and pubs join together to pour the first taste of “Lindz,” a special batch of beer crafted by the brewers at Smuttynose Brewing Company in memory of Lindsey Altshul.
The co-owner of Pepperland Cafe died unexpectedly in May. “His passing touched the Seacoast community, including the brewers at Smuttynose Brewing Company, in a deep, wide and profound way,” according to a statement from the brewery.
“Lindsey was a good friend to many of us at Smuttynose and we’re happy to that we were able to brew this beer for him,” says JT Thompson, spokesman for Smuttynose.
Altshul took pride in curating an excellent beer selection at his own restaurant, Pepperland Cafe in South Berwick, which continues under the ownership of his business partner Kevin Hahn.
The new brew was one of Altshul’s favorite beer styles, a German-style Kolsch. Lindz is light in body and relatively low in alcohol, at 5.1 percent. The beer also exclusively uses locally sourced hops from Valley Malt in Hadley, Mass. That choice reflects Altshul’s support of local and sustainable agriculture at his own restaurant.
Pepperland Cafe will be one of the many restaurants pouring the beer on Thursday. The list also includes restaurants Altshul supported as a patron. Lindz will be poured at The Press Room, Moxie, Portsmouth Brewery, Blue Mermaid, The River House, Street, Surf, Rudi’s, The Black Trumpet and The District in Portsmouth; The Barley Pub in Dover; Popper’s at The Mill in Newmarket; The Black Birch and When Pigs Fly in Kittery; Pepperland Cafe in South Berwick; Féile in Wells, Novare Res Bier Cafe, Nosh and Pi Men Miyake in Portland; and Nocturnem Draught House in Bangor.
