Fall vibes
Just because the summer is winding down doesn’t mean it’s time to turn the volume down. A number of fall music festivals and concert series with local and national names are heating up the next few months on the Seacoast.
Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival: The lucky 13th annual festival returns to downtown Portsmouth on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29 and 30, celebrating our maritime heritage with traditional seafaring music. More than a dozen local and regional acts will bring nautical songs to the pubs, cafes, churches and streets of the Port City. Among this year’s performers are Calico Jack, Great Bay Sailor, Tom Hall and Linn Schulz, Emery Hutchins, Jon and Rika, Audi Lane and Peter Souza, London Julie, Chris Maden, Mudhook, Bob Stuart, Ken Sweeney, Jeff Warner, and Bob Webb & Dave Peloquin. Funded by donations from friends and businesses, the free shows will be spread across roughly a dozen venues. For updates and more information, visit www.newenglandfolknetwork.org/pmff.
Pawtuckaway Music Festival: This year’s festival, taking place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 6 and 7, will feature a number of familiar Seacoast faces, along with regional acts from around the Northeast. Held at Pawtuckaway State Park in Nottingham, the event is expanding this year into a two-day outdoor camping festival. Among the opening day acts are Dan Blakeslee, Mr. Sister, Honey Watts, Wooden Dinosaur, People Skills, The Migs, and Fire Tower, plus theater performances by Katrina Pratt. That night at Neil’s Cove camping area, the “Fireside Acoustic Roundtable” will present Tell Stories, Christine Hayward, Cardstock, and Zack Sprague. The music continues on Sunday with performances from Tom Schena, The B.A. Canning Band, Cuddle Magic, Comma, Lady Bones, Mutes, and Death to Tyrants. Tickets are available for one or both days, with perks for larger donations. Visit www.pawtuckawaymusicfestival.com for more information.
Prescott Park Arts Festival: Though it’s been going all summer, the months-long outdoor festival in Portsmouth has at least a couple more music events on tap for the fall. On Friday, Sept. 14, Prescott Park will partner with 3S Artspace for an end-of-summer dance party, beginning with a screening of feature-length music video “Girl Walk // All Day,” and culminating with DJ sets from Portland’s CDR and RTS. The party takes place at 3S, located at 319 Vaughan St. in Portsmouth, beginning at 6 p.m. On Thursday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., Prescott Park will conclude this year’s River House Restaurant Concert Series with jazzy bluegrass band The Kruger Brothers in the park on Marcy Street. Donations are encouraged for both events. Visit www.prescottpark.org or www.3sarts.org for more information.
