Roots reggae launch party in Portsmouth
In a rare collision between the reggae worlds of England and New Hampshire, Portsmouth will host an upcoming release party for a new project from London’s Micah “Mr. Williamz” Williams. The launch party for locally produced single “We Run England” takes place at The Red Door on Sunday, Sept. 30.
The roots reggae single was produced by the Seacoast’s Green Lion Crew and released on Soul of the Lion Records, the imprint of Manchester native Joshua “Chambo” Chamberlain. It’s the debut single off “More Spiritual Riddim,” the brainchild of Green Lion’s Dana “Chai” Knowles and Zeke Stern.
A Jamaican native who was named the U.K.’s 2008 artist of the year by the BBC, Mr. Williamz will attend England’s launch party on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The local release follows four days later, featuring the Green Lion Crew. The event, which takes place during Green Lion’s regular weekly reggae night at The Red Door, will include music from “We Run England” and Green Lion gear.
Chamberlain and Stern first met while co-hosting the “Mad Lion Reggae Show” on WUNH at the University of New Hampshire. Chamberlain later moved to Jamaica to complete a degree in Jamaican popular culture. The pair continues to host radio programs on Dover’s WXGR, and Stern, operating under the name Green Lion, presents reggae nights at The Red Door on Sundays and Fat Belly’s on Wednesdays.
The launch party begins at 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 30 at The Red Door, 107 State St., Portsmouth.
