WFNX goes off the air
Boston’s long-time alternative rock radio station, 101.7 FM WFNX, aired its final broadcast on Friday, July 20. The station, owned by the Phoenix Media/Communications Group, recently sold its signal to ClearChannel Communications.
What ClearChannel will do with the station is unclear, but WFNX will continue as a Web-streaming station at wfnx.com. In addition, Boston.com’s new streaming alternative radio venture RadioBDC has brought on several former WFNX DJs, including Paul Driscoll, Adam 12, Julie Kramer and Henry Santoro.
Launched in 1983, WFNX has been cherished by many listeners for the last two decades. But the station has lost tens of millions of dollars in recent years, and owner Stephen Mindich said he could no longer afford to keep a terrestrial station afloat.
WFNX has already been streaming its signal online for over a decade. It will continue to stream at wfnx.com and offer a variety of mobile apps.
