Ioka makes the 'Seven to Save' list
The Ioka Theater in Exeter is among the properties included on the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance’s 2012 Seven to Save list. The annual program identifies “endangered historic structures” across the state.
Built in 1915, the Ioka closed nearly four years ago. Alan Lewis of Kensington bought the building at a foreclosure auction late last year and has been working with the Exeter Theater Company to restore it as a cultural center. But the structure requires major renovations, and the new owner’s intentions are fuzzy.
The Preservation Alliance announced the 2012 list on Oct. 16 at the Pandora Mill in Manchester. Also included are Kensington’s Town Hall, Littleton’s Community House, the Moultonborough Grange, New Durham’s 1772 Meetinghouse, the Drew Mill and Dam in Wakefield, and the Vilas Bridge in Walpole.
The alliance works to preserve historic structures through education and advocacy, providing assistance to community leaders, promoting the use of easements and tax incentives, and connecting property owners to weatherization information.
More than half of the 42 sites named to the list since 2006 are out of danger and “saved,” according to alliance director Jennifer Goodman.
