Obama visit cost $13,000
The final cost of President Barack Obama’s June 25 campaign visit to Oyster River High School in Durham was just shy of $13,000—well below the town’s June 22 estimate of $30,000 or its June 24 reduced estimate of nearly $20,000.
According to town administrator Todd Selig, the town was able to keep costs down through the careful distribution of personnel, and because several external agencies that provided services opted not to bill the town.
The total tally included charges from the Durham Police and Fire Departments, the Dover Police Department, the Farmington Police Department, the Strafford County Sheriff’s Office, the UNH Police Department and towing charges. Rochester and Barrington did not bill the town for services provided.
An anonymous donor has offered to give the town $20,000 to cover the costs of Obama’s visit. That offer, from a Durham resident, spurred several right-to-know requests from organizations and news outlets seeking the donor’s identity.
According to Selig, the town has only agreed with the donor vocally and has not received the funding or any documentation pertaining to it.
“When the town is in receipt of the funds, we will most certainly entertain further requests for information and will provide that information in accordance with the N.H. Right to Know law,” Selig said in a press release.
